00000001-11111111 :: 2005 - present
The series "00000001-11111111" is an exploration of sculpting complex behavior using fairly simple feedback loops either in digital hardware or programmed in some software environment. This project as a whole can be seen as a process and work in progress. At its start, the main goal was to explore the sonic possibilities of digital audio feedback systems inorder to form a musical vocabulary. What has developed is less of a vocabulary and more a means of creating formal structures in a realtime improvised compositional settings. By inserting pitch analysis processes into the feedback loop, the system gains the ability to "hear" itself and respond based on very simple rules (i.e. cancel out the ringing frequency and insert a tone at a different pitch). Suddnely what was once purely improvised becomes generative and dynamic. At present plans to add simple memory to the system are underway. Using simple models of human cognition in derived from our epirical knowledge of musical perception, one many possibilities for interesting "chaotic" music arise. By no means should this be taken as an attempt to replace humans as musicians. Rather than use those computer based musical tools made avaiable to us by commercial institutions to do what's easy and intuitive, I find much pleasure in using them in the "wrong way" to produce music that is not only creative and challenging but also beautiful.
